The MSc Equitation Science at Hartpury University is an advanced postgraduate programme designed to improve horse and rider welfare through evidence-based decision-making and the application of contemporary scientific research. The programme combines equine behaviour, cognition, welfare science, rider performance, biomechanics, and horse-human interactions to develop professionals capable of influencing positive change across the equestrian industry.
Students learn from internationally recognised experts in equitation science and gain access to world-class facilities, including over 230 horses on campus, an Equine Therapy Centre, Rider Performance Centre, Equine Assisted Activities Arena, and an international-standard Equestrian Centre hosting more than 200 events annually. The course focuses on ethical training practices, welfare assessment, equine cognition, rider biomechanics, sustainable equestrian management, and research-led industry innovation.
The programme offers a flexible study structure suitable for both recent graduates and industry professionals. Students may complete the qualification through traditional academic study or as part of continuing professional development (CPD). A major research dissertation allows students to investigate a specialist topic aligned with their career goals and interests.
