UK Study Visa (Tier 4) Guidance – Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Planning to study in the United Kingdom? The UK’s Student Route (previously known as Tier 4) is your legal pathway to world-class education. In this blog, we walk you through the entire visa process, eligibility, documents required, costs, and tips to make your journey successful.

1. What Is the UK Student Route (Tier 4) Visa?

The UK Student Visa, also known as the Student Route (formerly Tier 4), allows international students to pursue academic courses at registered institutions in the UK. It is issued by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and applies to students aged 16 or over.

2. Eligibility Requirements

  • Offer from a licensed student sponsor (UK university or college).
  • Proof of English language proficiency (IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, etc.).
  • Financial evidence showing ability to pay tuition fees and living expenses.
  • Valid passport and travel history.

3. Financial Requirements (Updated)

You must prove you can support yourself and pay for your course. As of 2025:

  • £13,347 for living in London (9 months)
  • £10,224 for other parts of the UK (9 months)
  • Tuition fees for the first year (or full course if less than 1 year)

4. Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)

A CAS is a reference number issued by your UK university after you accept the offer. It confirms your admission and is essential for your visa application.

5. Required Documents

  • Valid Passport
  • CAS Letter
  • Proof of Funds (bank statements or education loan)
  • English Language Test Results (IELTS/PTE) (if applicable)
  • Academic Certificates and Transcripts
  • TB Test Certificate (if applicable)
  • Parental Consent (if under 18)

6. Visa Application Process

  1. Apply online via the UK Government's visa portal.
  2. Pay the visa fee (Visa application fees: Standard: £524, Priority: £1024, Super Priority: £1524 as of 2025) and IHS surcharge (Immigration Health Surcharge).
  3. Book and attend your biometric appointment at a visa application centre.
  4. Submit supporting documents online or at the VAC.

7. Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)

You’ll need to pay the IHS as part of your visa application. This allows access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). It’s currently £776 per year.

8. Decision Time and Visa Validity

Most decisions are made within 3 weeks. If approved, you'll receive a vignette (30-day sticker) in your passport and a BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) upon arrival in the UK.

9. Can You Bring Dependents?

As of January 1, 2024, only international students enrolled in PhD or research-based postgraduate programs can bring dependents (spouse or children). For a detailed breakdown of the latest UK dependent visa rules, click here to view who can bring their spouse along .

10. Post-Study Work Visa (Graduate Route)

After completing your course, you can apply for the Graduate Route which allows:

  • 2 years post-study work for undergraduate/master's graduates
  • 3 years for PhD graduates

11. Tips for a Smooth Visa Process

  • Start early and gather all your documents.
  • Ensure your bank statements meet UKVI format and duration.
  • Attend mock interviews if required by your institution.
  • Double-check your CAS information matches your documents.
