Explore Public Health and Epidemiology
Langara College’s Health Sciences program offers a comprehensive education designed to improve human health at local, national, and global levels. This multidisciplinary program focuses on public health, a critical area of medicine that examines the causes of health variations within and between populations, aiming to reduce health inequity and inequality worldwide.
What You’ll Learn in the Health Sciences Program
At Langara, the Health Sciences program is grounded in epidemiology, the core science of public health. Students will learn to analyze population health, develop hypotheses, test them, and create evidence-based solutions to improve health outcomes. With a focus on data-driven decision-making, the program empowers students to evaluate interventions and promote public health practices that positively impact society.
Key Components of the Health Sciences Curriculum
-
Epidemiology in Public Health
Epidemiology is central to the Health Sciences program. It provides students with the tools to identify health patterns, analyze health disparities, and implement interventions that enhance health outcomes at the population level. Students will gain experience in data collection, hypothesis testing, and the evaluation of health interventions based on solid evidence. -
A Multidisciplinary Approach to Health
The Health Sciences program draws from both arts and science disciplines to create a comprehensive understanding of health. Students will study subjects such as anthropology, psychology, sociology, history, geography, political science, chemistry, biology, environmental sciences, and statistics. This holistic approach is essential to understanding the many factors that influence public and population health. -
Emerging Health Topics
The program explores modern and critical issues in public health, including addiction, ecohealth, gender, race and racism, sexuality, indigeneity, and social justice. These topics address the growing understanding of how societal factors impact health and help shape policies that reduce health disparities across diverse communities. -
Effective Communication in Health Sciences
Health professionals must translate complex scientific research into accessible, actionable information. Langara’s program emphasizes the development of strong communication skills, preparing students to engage the public and advocate for healthier communities through clear, effective messaging.
