Therapeutic Recreation

The Therapeutic Recreation Diploma at Douglas College prepares students to improve the health, well-being, and quality of life of individuals living with physical, developmental, cognitive, and mental health challenges. Through a combination of classroom learning and practical field experience, students learn to design, implement, and evaluate recreation-based therapeutic programs including fitness activities, creative arts, gardening, adapted sports, outdoor recreation, and wellness initiatives. The program includes extensive practicum placements in healthcare and community settings, providing valuable real-world experience. Graduates are prepared for careers in recreation therapy, community health, rehabilitation, long-term care, and social service organizations, with a direct pathway into the Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation degree.

Program Requirements
  • Academic Requirement: General College Admission Requirements. Admission includes Letter of Intent, Program Application Form, Resume, Two Reference Letters, and may require a Personal Interview.
  • ELP Requirement: Douglas College English Language Proficiency Requirement. Typically IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 or equivalent.
  • Special Requirement: Letter of Intent, Resume, Two Reference Letters, possible Interview, Criminal Record Check after admission, vaccination/TB requirements for practicum placements, basic computer skills recommended.
