The Early Childhood Education Diploma at Douglas College prepares students to become qualified Early Childhood Educators and Special Needs Educators through a combination of academic study and practical field experience. Students develop skills in child development, inclusive education, play-based learning, family engagement, health and nutrition, and classroom management. Through practicum placements and hands-on learning experiences, graduates are prepared to work in licensed childcare centres, preschools, early learning programs, and inclusive educational settings while meeting provincial licensing requirements in British Columbia.
- Academic Requirement: Grade 12 or equivalent. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age by December 31 of the year of entry
- ELP Requirement: IELTS 6.5 Overall with no band below 6.0 (or equivalent approved English proficiency test).
- Special Requirement: Two reference letters, Criminal Record Check, Medical Declaration, minimum GPA 1.5 (for applicants with 9+ post-secondary credits), and 20 hours of volunteer/work experience in a licensed ECE setting before practicum enrolment.

• Meet Douglas College General Admission Requirements.
• Be at least 18 years of age by December 31 of the year of program entry.
• Submit two reference letters from non-relatives familiar with your experience and suitability for working with young children.
• Complete and submit official academic transcripts from all previously attended institutions.
• Provide proof of English language proficiency as required by Douglas College.
• Complete a Criminal Record Check as required by the program.
• Submit a medical declaration or assessment confirming satisfactory physical and emotional health.
• Applicants with nine or more post-secondary credits must be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 1.5.
• Complete a minimum of 60 program credits for graduation.
• Complete at least 50% (30 credits) of program coursework at Douglas College.
• Successfully complete Practicum I and Practicum II field placements in approved Early Childhood Education settings.
• Complete and document a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer or paid work experience in a licensed Early Childhood Education setting before practicum enrollment.
• Develop professional competencies in child development, inclusive education, play-based learning, family engagement, health and nutrition, observation, and curriculum planning.
• Gain practical experience working with children from birth to eight years of age, including children with diverse abilities and special needs.
• Become eligible to apply for provincial licensing as an Early Childhood Educator and Special Needs Educator in British Columbia.
• Complete all graduation requirements within seven (7) years of initial enrolment and comply with all Douglas College academic policies.
