Child And Youth Care

The Child and Youth Care Diploma at Douglas College prepares students to support children, youth, and families facing challenges such as mental health concerns, substance use, family conflict, abuse, neglect, and social barriers. Through a combination of classroom learning and supervised practicum experiences, students develop professional skills in relationship building, counselling support, community engagement, crisis intervention, and youth development. Graduates are prepared for rewarding careers in schools, community agencies, residential programs, family support services, and youth-focused organizations.

Program Requirements
  • Academic Requirement: Grade 12 or equivalent. Applicants must meet Douglas College General Admission Requirements.
  • ELP Requirement: IELTS 6.5 Overall with no band below 6.0
  • Special Requirement: Current resume, Child and Youth Care Entrance Questionnaire, two non-relative reference letters, and Criminal Record Check after admission offer.

• Complete at least 50% (30 credits) of program coursework at Douglas College.

• Develop competencies in child and youth care practice, relationship building, mental health support, family services, community engagement, diversity, and professional ethics.

• Gain practical experience working with children, youth, and families through supervised field education opportunities.

• Complete all graduation requirements within seven (7) years of initial enrolment.

• Graduates may pursue careers in youth services, family support programs, schools, residential care settings, community agencies, mental health services, and child development organizations.
