The MSc in Applied Animal Behaviour & Welfare is a specialised postgraduate programme designed for students who wish to understand animal behaviour from a scientific perspective and apply this knowledge to improve welfare across a wide range of species. This course explores the biological, psychological, and environmental factors that influence animal behaviour, equipping students with the skills needed to assess welfare, manage behaviour-related challenges, and implement evidence-based welfare practices.
Students study topics such as behavioural science, cognition, ethology, welfare assessment frameworks, stress and emotional states in animals, human–animal interactions, and applied behaviour management. The programme also introduces modern technologies used in welfare monitoring and behaviour analysis, providing students with valuable hands-on experience.
Through practical workshops, case studies, research training, and real-world projects, learners gain the ability to evaluate animal environments, identify welfare risks, and develop effective behavioural interventions. The dissertation or research project allows students to delve deeper into a chosen area of interest, supported by expert academics and industry professionals.
Graduates are prepared for careers in animal welfare organisations, research institutions, zoos, farms, veterinary practices, NGOs, wildlife conservation, education, and behaviour consultancy. This programme also builds a strong foundation for doctoral research or advanced professional practice.
